GNP to Push Korean Version of North Korean Human Rights Act

According to this, all 120 GNP members are co-sponsoring. There are 299 seats in the assembly. The backers thus need to pick off 30 more votes from somewhere, although I can’t see where they’re going to get them this time. I will try to get my hands on an English version to see if the thing has any teeth.

Uri, of course, does not even want to discuss this subject. The main significance of this is that (1) it’s a substantial improvement over the GNP’s “Sunshine Lite” platform; and (2) it will start a national debate about what’s really going on in the North, which is ultimately the only hope for electing a better government in South Korea. Who knows? It might even lead to electing better people into the GNP itself. And given the GNP’s deservedly low esteem among the public, any effort to build an opposition that actually stands for something would come as a very welcome development indeed.
