Two More Cheers for the United Nations!

They’ll get three when this translates to action, but a new draft U.N. resolution, to be introduced to the General Assembly by the EU at the end of this month, is an outstanding new beginning after years of failure:

The draft resolution, exclusively obtained by the Chosun Ilbo, expressed serious concern about North Korea’s rejection of UN humanitarian deliveries from the end of the year and urges the North to give humanitarian groups full access to the country so they can monitor much-needed aid.

The draft lashes the reclusive country for blocking the activities of international relief groups including the UN World Food Program and demands Pyongyang give them free and safe access to every part of the country.

It calls for an end to human rights violations such as torture and illegal detention, singling out the brutal treatment of defectors who are caught or repatriated. It chastises the Stalinist country for its failure to abide by the UNHRC resolutions over the past three years and urges it to cooperate fully with the UN special rapporteur
on North Korean human rights.

Brilliant. Although the British were the actual architects of the resolution, the EU also deserves high praise, and that’s something you’ve seldom see on this site.
