Into the Belly of the Beast

LiNK is bringing its message about the suffering of the North Korean people to South Korean universities. The next locale is Ewha Womens’ University, which is only a few blocks from Yonsei University, which has seen more than its share of violence toward the police and anyone opposing the views of those on the radical, pro-North left:

University student groups have often been associated with pro-North Korean activity, and observers noted it is unique that a student government is sponsoring an event that discusses North Korean human rights abuses. The event, scheduled for April 18-20 at Ewha’s Student Union Building, will be co-hosted by Liberation in North Korea, a rights organization that is composed of 70 student organizations in the United States.

Ewha Dream is planning a photo exhibition, a screening of public execution footage from the North and testimony from North Korean defectors. “We want to raise awareness among young people,” said Diana Sur, a student representative of the Seoul chapter of LiNK. “This will be a chance for people to speak up for social issues they believe in.”

We all wish them success and safety. In today’s South Korean universities, which are festooned with pro-North, anti-U.S. banners and slogans, talking about human rights for North Koreans takes real courage. It’s also going to be an uphill struggle to get anyone to take notice.
